Singpho in India support KIA in war with Burmese Army

Singpho (Kachins) in India residing in Arunachal Pradesh State have welcomed the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO)’s leadership of the Kachin people and has supported their decision to defend themselves and fight the Burmese Army.
In a statement released on June 26 the Singpho Development Society (SDS) expressed deep concern about the plight of the Kachin people in the midst of a civil war facing an extremely difficult situation. It said they believe in and support the leadership provided by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the armed-wing of KIO for its people.
SDS president Mayoung Maio told Thailand-based Kachin News Group that “KIA is on the right in this war.”
“In the 17 years of ceasefire there has been no evidence of progress and development for Kachin people. Instead the people have suffered economically, socially and politically,” he said.
He said before the war Kachin people were suffering given the oppression unleashed by the military government. People have no justice and right over their own land.
Civil war broke out for the second time after the 17-year ceasefire between the KIA and Burmese Army since June 9, when the latter launched a military offensive on KIA battalion 15 at Sang Gang post in N’mawk (Momauk) Township, Manmaw (Bhamo) district.
The war has created over 20,000 Kachin war refugees, who have fled to the China border fearing torture, rape and use as porters by Burmese troops.
Kachins in India said they believe KIO will protect its own people and try to free Kachin State from the yoke of the Burmese government.
“We believe KIO/A will lead the people to gain independence for our own land” the statement added.
